Your Online Therapy Session

Your Online Therapy Session

Preparing for an online therapy session with Aspire Counseling should be straightforward. This guide is here to help.

Join your session

To join your online session, use the Aspire Counseling Sessions waiting room.

You can join directly through a web browser on a computer or tablet without installing any software or creating an account. If you prefer to join from a mobile device, Psychology Today also offers an optional mobile app. Bookmarking the waiting room link makes it easy to join before each session.

Before you join

Review this brief checklist to help your session run smoothly:

  • Internet connection: Ensure you have a stable internet connection.
  • Camera and microphone: Allow access to your camera and microphone when prompted by your browser or app.
  • Private space: Choose a quiet, private location where you feel comfortable speaking freely without being overheard.
  • Reduce distractions: Close competing tabs, silence phone notifications, and give yourself a few moments to settle in before the session begins.

Having trouble?

If a technology problem occurs before or during a session, try these steps:

  • Cannot connect: Text me directly, call, or send an email to let me know. Use the contact details you already have, or find them on the Contact page. We can troubleshoot together or discuss another way to meet.
  • Connection drops: Try reconnecting directly to the Aspire Counseling Sessions waiting room.
  • Repeated disconnects: Restarting your web browser or switching to a more reliable internet connection can sometimes help.
  • Microphone, speaker, or camera not working: Check that your browser has permission to use your microphone and camera. In your device and session settings, make sure the microphone, speakers or headphones, and camera you want to use are selected. Check that your microphone isn’t muted and your sound is turned up.
  • Still having trouble: Close other video-call apps or tabs, then quit and reopen your browser. Another app you used earlier may still be using your microphone or camera. If that doesn’t help, restart your device or try a different browser.
  • Alternative arrangements: If needed, we can discuss alternative technologies or meeting arrangements.

Making the session more comfortable

A few practical adjustments can help you feel more present and comfortable:

  • Privacy and headphones: Headphones can make it less likely that someone nearby will hear my side of the conversation. They can also improve audio quality and reduce feedback. If finding a quiet room at home or work is difficult, some clients meet from a parked car or another private space.
  • Hiding self-view: Seeing your own video square can be surprisingly distracting. Hiding your self-view on screen allows you to focus naturally on the conversation.
  • Space before and after: Taking a few quiet minutes before a session helps you transition into the conversation. Giving yourself a short break afterward allows time to process before moving on to work, class, or daily responsibilities.
